Wow I painted these 17 years ago.. I showed a series of 30 cannibal paintings for AWOL Gallery (now gone AWOL) in Toronto. I remember how lovely it was my friends showed up and met some fellow artists I would soon follow very closely as our careers blossomed overtime. It was an art show for artists, i think the general public was maybe weirded out? Most thought it was funny, but maybe too shy to buy. I didn’t sell a single one, which isn’t a great feeling when your peers are painting abstracts and selling at galleries already, or getting real professions in their 20s to 30s, buying houses and starting families. I was still scrambling, juggling minimum wage jobs and figuring out if i needed to go back to school to learn some real skills, practical ones, which I ended up doing. Despite all that, I’m still painting, never stopped, and look how far i’ve come! My work has evolved so much. In that time the Cannibal paintings sat in a darkend basement but slowly started to move, mostly online it garnered a cult like following. Most of the batch are gone now, these 3 big ones are still available. I will say the largest collection i know belongs to a plastic surgeon who bought in bulk, who I refer to as Hannibal Lector. Could you be a Hannibal Lector type? Or a Caligula? DM, it would be my pleasure to serve you up a dish! #surgeons #cannabalism
